Dentistry & Me

What’s beauty without brains?

Through my background in healthcare and natural inclination for all things creative, I realized that the field of dentistry was made for me. As I approach my final semesters at UCF earning a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences Pre-Clinical, I am shadowing inspiring dentists and learning valuable skills and techniques to help me in my career. I am taking advantage of every opportunity offered to me by being a part of the Pre-Dental Student Association (PDSA) and continuing my career as a Registered Behavior Therapist (RBT) in hopes of becoming a Pediatric Dentist for children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Diversity Week 2024 at Harvard School of Dental Medicine

In March of 2024, I was invited by Harvard School of Dental Medicine to attend their Diversity Week. During these events, I was able to gain valuable insight into treating special needs patients and participate in discussions surrounding LGBTQIA+ healthcare in the industry while growing my dental community.

University of Florida Impressions Program ( sponsored by the Student National Dental Association) x Kandor Dental shadowing

In the summer of 2023, I earned a spot at the University of Florida’s Impressions program, During this program, I was able to learn how to take impressions and wax teeth to understand morphology and practice manual dexterity.

  • Working as an RBT has allowed me to fully understand the need for healthcare professionals that can cater to the individualized needs of children with autism. There is a large gap between the demand and amount for healthcare professionals that can provide adequate care for differently-abled children. I plan to close this gap and utilize my unique learning path and skills to foster a clinical environment that merges ABA and dentistry.

  • By taking the required courses of a pre-dental student; Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, etc. I have been able to develop a well-rounded education that equips me for all things dentistry. By participating in healthcare clubs such as PDSA and VillageMentors, I have been able to grow my community and learn from my peers. My leadership roles have also aided in my ability to work as a team player and lead when needed. My shadowing experience thus far has taught me the foundations of dentistry and patient care and leaves me hungry for more!

  • The unique obstacles and challenges that I face as a queer POC have given me a deep strength for resilience and perseverance. I have a strong sense of compassion and care for my patients as I have been marginalized all my life and have had stereotypes precede my own successful abilities. My history with being an RBT puts me in an amazing position to work with the special needs population as I can understand their individualized needs and adjust their patient care with clarity and expertise!
